Big dreams in small brains? Evidence for a REM sleep-like state in jumping spiders (by Daniela Rössler)

Big dreams in small brains? Evidence for a REM sleep-like state in jumping spiders (by Daniela Rössler):

All animals sleep, but despite this behavior being universal, we are far from understanding its origin, evolution and function(s). Particularly the study of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is still largely centered on vertebrates. The most salient feature of REM sleep is the movement of eyes during this phase. Movable eyes, however, have evolved only in a limited number of lineages, an adaptation notably absent in arthropods, restricting cross-species comparisons. Jumping spiders, however, do not move their eyes, but their retinas to redirect gaze. In this seminar, I will present our recent findings of a REM sleep-like state in these animals. CW: there will be numerous videos of sleeping spiders.
