Snapshot Europe 2025

Scientists across Europe are invited to join the annual wildlife camera trapping project

July 08, 2025

Every September and October, researchers from across Europe deploy camera traps to monitor terrestrial mammals and birds across all types of habitats—from wild forests to urban parks. The 2025 season continues this collaborative tradition, building a continent-wide snapshot of wildlife.

About Snapshot Europe

Launched in 2021, Snapshot Europe is the first Europe-wide camera trap survey with a goal to publicly share data on mammal and bird species.

Each year, hundreds of scientists coordinate to set cameras at 10–50 sites each for at least 3 weeks during September and October.

Together, they have collected thousands of images of terrestrial mammals and birds across all habitat types. With this data, scientists learn about the behavior and distribution of these species and how they respond to changes in the landscape over time. The goal is to document the diversity of mammals in Europe to help conservation efforts across the continent.
