Main Focus

The focus of my work lies in linking census data of voluntary birdwatchers with science in four main fields, namely (1) species and environmental protection, with the main focus of my publications on Red Listing of birds (Germany, Federal State of Baden-Württemberg), the identification (and quantification) of threat factors, the development of Action Plans, the study of the effects of climate change on bird distributions, and the outbreaks of avian influenza; (2) avifaunistic research, focusing on bird atlas works (currently the breeding bird atlases of Europe EBBA2, and of Lake Constance), federal state avifauna, the population trends of birds on national and federal state levels, improving the general standards of ornithological field methods etc.; (3) the occurrence and spread of avian non-natives, with a focus on status assessment, on the impact on indigenous bird communities and on invasiveness; (4) the study of waterbirds, especially their migrations, stop-over and wintering ecology, moulting periods, nutritional requirements, and population trends.
