Social learning in Great Tits

Department of Collective Behavior

What’s the project about?
Great tits (Parus major) can socially learn to use a foraging puzzle from observing each other, and this behavior slowly spreads through networks of individuals. This project would look at how birds’ social networks change over time, and more specifically how the position of knowledgeable birds might change, and how this might relate to solving success. The data comes from a 5 week-long diffusion experiment I am currently running in the population of wild great tits surrounding the Möggingen offices.

Who can apply?
The project is available to MSc students.

What skills would you use and develop?

  •     R programming
  •     Social network analysis

Who should I contact?

Michael Chimento, Department of Collective Behavior
