Main Focus

I am interested in the behavior and ecology of social animals. In my master thesis I am investigating whether insectivorous bats use freshly mowed meadows for foraging and if they use olfactory cues to find them. Previous observations showed that more insectivorous bats foraged over freshly mowed meadows compared to not mowed meadows presumably because insects are stirred up by the mowing in large quantities. I try to quantify this by monitoring insect abundance and bat occurrence before and after mowing.  Moreover, I will mimic freshly mowed meadows by spreading the scent of freshly mowed grass on a meadow that has not recently been mowed and monitor if this increases bat activity.
