Cognitive evolution is one of the most hotly debated topics in biology, with considerable uncertainty remaining about the likely drivers. The predominant hypotheses for cognitive evolution typically emphasise the importance of either non-social ecological factors or social factors, but findings are contradictory and contentious. Using a long-term study population of Australian magpies, I investigate the causes and consequences of individual variation in cognitive performance
