MPIAB Seminar - Talk by Maria van Noordwijk & Carel van Schaik

As Max Planck Fellows we will start our Comparative Socioecology group at MPI-AB in September. We have two major areas of research.

Maria van Noordwijk: THE SOCIAL LIFE OF LONERS

Bornean orangutans are known for their solitary habits. Yet, behavioral and genetic data suggest a clearly differentiated social landscape, which we predict does not only affect daily ranging patterns but also career decisions of males and females.

Carel van Schaik: ECOLOGY AND THE EXPENSIVE BRAIN

Brains have high and unvarying energy needs, and some cognitive functions also need time to fully develop. Due to these costs, ecology and opportunities for parental provisioning are major evolutionary determinants of brain size.
