The Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior at its sites in Constance and Radolfzell offers an international, interdisciplinary, and cooperative environment that opens up unique research opportunities. The goal of our basic research is to develop a quantitative and predictive understanding of the decisions and movements of animals in their natural environment.

MoveApps, hostet by the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, would like to fill a Technical Assistant (m/f/d) position starting as soon as possible. The workplace will be in Constance and Radolfzell.

Background

MoveApps is an open analysis platform for animal tracking data, developed with the aim to make sophisticated analytical tools accessible to a global community of movement ecologists and wildlife managers. It was beta launched in February 2021 and has currently close to 1500 registered users. MoveApps is being developed by a small team within the Animal-Environment Interaction Lab in collaboration with an external software development company. We are an open, collaborative and international team, aiming at creating a friendly and jointly productive work environment.

Your tasks

  • help maintain and improve existing apps
  • create new apps
  • help maintaining the user manual up to date
  • support other developers if they encounter issues when developing their apps
  • test new features implemented in MoveApps
  • help improve and optimize the platform

Your profile

  • proficient in R and/or Python and willingness to learn or improve the less known programming language
  • good English written skills
  • willingness to participate in a collaborative environment
  • ability to work independently, reliably, and responsibly
  • good organizational skills

Additional skills that would be a valuable asset

  • experience in software development
  • experience with cloud computing
  • experience with analysis pipelines in science
  • experience handling and analyzing location data (e.g. GPS)
  • experience handling and analyzing non-location data collected by bio-logging devices (e.g. acceleration, magnetometer, etc)

The position will start in as soon as possible and is initially limited for 2 years.
